Before you begin to map out a plan for your career as an artist, you need to understand you goals and your motivation for your goals. Try to ignore the media, your family, co-workers, and friends as you work through the questions. This is the time to be brutally honest with yourself. For this exercise to work, you need to answer all of the questions.
Your Artist Career Goals: The Most Important Questions
1. What is your end goal?
2. Why is this your end goal?
3. What is positive about your end goal?
4. What is negative about your end goal?
5. What will you do after you've achieved this goal?
6. What if you don't achieve this goal?
7. What will you do if you don't achieve this goal?
8. How will not achieving the goal effect your life?
Our Example:Artist Career Goals
1. What is your end goal? To act in a BBC production.
2. Why is this your end goal? I admire the quality of acting and want to be part of it. I view it as the ultimate success.
3. What is positive about your end goal? I would feel great about my ability to act if I were in a BBC production.
4. What is negative about your end goal? I don't know if I have the talent to accomplish my goal - Just having the goal makes me insecure. In addition, I have no BBC contacts.
5. What will you do after you've achieved this goal? I'll work to act in another BBC production.
6. What if you don't achieve this goal? I'll continue to work toward it.
7. What will you do if you don't achieve this goal? I'll continue to pursue work on the stage.
8. How will not achieving the goal effect your life? It won't have a great effect on my everyday life. I'd still feel like a success if I was acting on stage.
The questions above are a great way to get a good start on your artist career plan. They're simply a template. Feel free to add to the questions. Use them for each separate goal you have or as an overall view of what you're pursuing.
