Goals are intensely personal things. However, permit us to give a bit of advice. Try to think of goals in the plural. Have multiple goals. That is, discard the idea that there's one end goal and when you achieve that goal, life will be perfect. This is a lottery mentality. It breeds misery. Instead, have multiple goals at all times and a goal to pursue after you've achieved one of the big ones.
If you don't take this approach, you run the risk of depression every time you achieve a goal. It's wonderful to be the lead dancer in a hit ballet, but that only lasts a while. Then what? There's always going to be the day after the awards ceremony, the day after your work receives stellar reviews.
If you're in the mindset that you always have goals, then your career has a rhythm and you keep your mind open to new possibilities. Working this way will enable you to enjoy today's work, knowing that when you're finished with this project there's going to be another one right around the corner with its own rewards. Remember that you're the one that will create that new opportunity by having new goals.
